Key Concepts to Master
People domain questions test your understanding of:
- Conflict resolution techniques — Know the difference between confronting/problem-solving, compromising, smoothing, forcing, and withdrawing. The PMI-preferred approach is always direct, collaborative problem-solving.
- Servant leadership — The PM should shield the team from distractions, remove blockers, and empower members to self-organize. "Servant leader" is the PMP exam's default lens for people questions.
- Tuckman's ladder — Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing, Adjourning. The PMP expects you to recognize which stage a team is in and what leadership style is appropriate.
- Virtual team management — Communication frequency, cultural sensitivity, time zone awareness, and technology enablement are critical.
